I love the ancient world – the stories and the cultures that inform so much of what goes on around us. My areas of expertise are Ancient North Africa and the Sasanian Persian Empire and late antique Iran. What we know about the history of these cultures has often been constructed for us as ‘others’ by Greeks and Romans and I have always wanted and been inspired by discovering more than that simplistic idea.
So my passion is in the stories and archaeology and connections between many places in the ancient Mediterranean and western Asia. What can we find out about everyday life, the lived experience within the big historical narratives of the times.
Through archaeological material, historical sources, scholarship, popular imagination and memory – I aim to bring a better context to the ancient worlds and make them relevant for today.
